A comprehensive eye exam provides insight into much more than a glasses prescription. When your pupils are dilated we are able to clearly examine small blood vessels in the retina in the back of the eye. These veins and arteries in the eye are one of the best ways to see changes that may be occurring throughout the rest of the body. Many common conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol cause changes that are easily seen in the eye. This is just one of many reasons why we recommend all people have an eye exam once a year, even if they feel they are not having vision symptoms. So when making plans for routine health visits, be sure to include your annual eye exam.
